Liles can't be bought out the Leafs
already used there 2 buyouts when they
bought out Grabovski and Komisarek

2.) 31 Jul 2013
Toronto has no buyouts left so you are stuck with liles

3.) 31 Jul 2013
Why would they buyout Lilles? Yes it would save them just over $2 million per season but he would count against their cap for another six years so buying him out is silly.

4.) 31 Jul 2013
Not entirely true after the arbitration hearings the leafs have time to use a regular buyout if they choose to it will count against the cap unlike the compliance buyout they used on grabo and komi

5.) 31 Jul 2013
^Toronto has no "compliance buy outs" left, they can however buy out his contract like any other year (2/3 Of the remaining value spread over 6 years - works out to 1. 25 or so). So he can be bought out, it just creates a cap hit for the next 6 years.

My guess is that Nonis is waiting to see where negotiations with Kadri and Franson go, then he will decide what to do with Liles. I think a buy out is his last resort. He would likely prefer to trade him, and this is likely achieved by adding either a prospect, picks or retaining some cash. Teams also are far away from having their rosters set, so he's also likely waiting until teams figure out what they have or don't have, then decide what direction to go.

I definitely believe there is a market out their for a player like Liles (especially with a prospect/pick/salary retention involved), it's just a wait and see scenario.

6.) 31 Jul 2013
No, the Leafs can buyout Liles between August 2nd and the 4th, but it will not be a compliance buyout. They will take a cap hit for this. However, it will save them $2. 5M in cap this season which is the most critical.

7.) 31 Jul 2013
Can you not just do a regular buyout on him? Not a compliance buyout?

8.) 31 Jul 2013
Two days until the start of the non-compliance buyout period, August 2nd to 4th. There will be a 48 hour span where the Maple Leafs could buyout John-Michael Liles if they wish. If the Leafs bought out Liles, he would count against their cap for the next six years. It would give them an extra $2, 583, 333 this season.

9.) 31 Jul 2013
There are compliance buyouts from aug 2 - 4. but they will pay him for the next six years

10.) 31 Jul 2013
Sorry NON-compliance buyout

11.) 31 Jul 2013
They can buy him out and it goes towards the cap. they can buy out the whole team if they want too

12.) 31 Jul 2013
Of course the Leafs can buyout Liles, it's just not an amnesty buyout.

13.) 31 Jul 2013
Yes they can buy out liles, from TSn
"Nonis also has the option of a second buyout period which lasts for 48 hours, three days after the team's final arbitration case is settled, should the team choose to free up additional dollars. Leafs have another option to buy out yet 1 more player"

14.) 31 Jul 2013
Toronto has used both their compliance buyouts but there is nothing to say they can`t buyout Liles ( aug 2 -4 window ) in which case his contract still counts against the cap/ I brlieve the buyout is 2/3 so Leafs will save about 2.3 million by doing this.

15.) 31 Jul 2013
I wouldn't buy out liles- WORST CASE SCENARIO the leafs put him on waivers and someone picks him up. OR they put him in the minors and his cap doesn't count. Just think of it, if we buy him out, we save 2. 5M this year. but down the road (next year) we have to sign Kessel, Phaneuf, and Gardiner. We need as much cap as we can. So IMO, trade him, if not, waivers, if he clears, minors.

16.) 31 Jul 2013
If they buy out the whole team it would only cost them 64.2 million dollars over 150 years that's all! Smart thinking isn't it? Only a non leafer would state that obvious thought! lmao.

17.) 31 Jul 2013
The new CBA doesn't allow you to burry contracts in the AHL. Only a small portion (under 1 million) will not count again the cap.
