Some moves I'd like to see Ottawa make

At the draft:

To Buf:
Robin Lehner

To Ott:
Nick Baptiste
NYI 2015 2nd

Gives Buffalo a potential goalie of the future and Ottawa gets another hometown kid and a potential scoring winger.

To Boston:
Alex Chaisson

To Ottawa:
Ryan Spooner
2016 5th

Gryba anywhere for anything.

To Nyr:
Ottawa's 2nd
Marcus Hogberg

To Ott:
Carl Hagelin

Gives Ottawa more speed and New York get a big Swedish goalie that can be mentored by Lundqvist and a pick.

To: Arizona
Jared Cowen
Nyi 2nd 2015

To Ottawa:
Ari 3rd 2015

Ottawa gives up a pick to get rid of Cowens contract. He gets a fresh start in Arizona.

Ottawa drafts Chabot at 18. If he's taken then take Kylington.

ReSign
Matt O'Connor to an ELC
Hammond 2 year 1.5 mil per (prove yourself)
Condra 3 years 1.5 per (wants to stay and is cheap)
Hoffman 1 year 2 mil (prove yourself)
Zibanejad 2 years 3 mil per (bridge)
Stone 3 years 4 mil per (bridge kind of like Johansens)
Hagelin 2 years 3 mil (see if he fits with the team)

Offer sheet
Dougie Hamilton 3 years 4.75 per
Boston is tight on cap space and might not be able to match barring some big moves

Phillips and neil retire

Ottawa's lines next year

Macarthur-Turris-Stone
Hoffman-Zibanejad-Ryan
Hagelin-Pageau-Lazar
Smith-Spooner-Condra
Legwand as an extra

Methot-Karlsson
Wiercioch-Hamilton
Someone-Ceci
Anderson
Hammond
Try out Claesson and Wideman with Ceci and see how they pan out. If not put him with Borowiecki. Baptiste goes to the AHL or back to Junior, whichever he's eligible for. O'Connor goes to the AHL. These moves give Ottawa a much improved defense with a very fast team that can transition really well. Should fit the cap, but I'm not 100%, also Melnyk would have to be willing to spend to the cap, which is the most unlikely thing happening out of this while post.

ARZ is prolly one of the last teams in need of Cowen

I think you are under-estimating what players salaries would be. Like Hoffman would be more up towards 3, and someone like Edmonton would probably over pay for Hammond.

But Hamilton will not leave Boston unless you grossly over-pay. With an offer sheet you have to over pay so the other teams can't match or make it difficult for them to match (ie. Shea Weber) so this means giving Hamilton about 6 million per year so Boston has to make serious changes to match the offer.

I also have seen a lot of big name RFAs thru the years and it seems GMs are reluctant to sign offer sheets. It may have to do with a respect factor with not taking the teams best young players by over-paying.

Boston trade is horrible. Spooner would get a lot more than Chiasson alone, and you add a draft pick? And BTW, Hamilton isn't going anywhere. Cap is going up, and it would be manageable by that time anyway.

@Draisaitl I don't know enough about Phoenix's d core so I just figured after moving Yandle and Michalek that Cowen could fit somewhere and at least get a fresh start.

@JF I agree you have to offer a lot to get someone to not match it but Boston is tight to the cap with lots of contracts and they have to sign other guys and they probably want Soderberg back.

@Seabass you are talking about Spooner like he's Krecji. He had a solid end of the season but who knows if he can keep that pace up for 82 games. Chiasson had a down season but he really doesn't fit with Ottawa's style. I think he'd be a better player in Boston. I'd do Chiasson for Spooner straight up to be honest.

Well, I guess they have OEL, Gormley, Stone, Murphy, Moore and Dahlbeck as a great core to build upon. Plus the 3rd pick which would easily get them Hanifin if they want to have another D.
