They're giving up their future. Karlsson also gets payed a lot, and Edmonton wants to have that salary cap to resign McDavid.

lol NN21, karlsson is one of the best values in the league. piad nothing for what he brings. he signed it as a rfa, but that's beside the main point of him being a phenomenal player at a price that is way under market value.

also, by the time mcdavid is due, ference, nikitin, purcell, and other significant cap hits I can't think of off the top of my head will be gone. the canadian economy will also likely bounce back by then, which leads to a cap increase due to incresed revenue when transferred to USD.

We need a big, 6'3 230lbs shutdown defenceman.

Not an offensive minded defenseman.
