Interesting. I know Holland said he didn't want to trade his 1st, but he has limited options to improve his team until they can get out from under some bad contracts and buyouts.

I agree chickenfoot. No one wants to trade a 1st but when you’re at risk of missing the playoffs for the 5th time in 7 years, with 2 of the best players in the world, you have to do whatever it takes to give them some success.

I think the franchise is on thin ice with a cpl guys they can’t afford to lose. A 1st round pick will be the least of their worries if they ask to leave.

Holland did say that he didn't want to trade the 1st for a rental, so both Varlamov and Mayfield have another year left on their contracts.

It would definitely fill 2 spots on the team that needs to get better. Koskinen needs to go (fine back-up but Oilers need to move on from him) and Smith can't stay healthy this yr (too risky going into the playoffs) .

Also, a 3rd-D pair of Niemeläinen and Mayfield would be great!

@Oil10. It makes sense for sure. Mayfield has been really good in his role for the Islanders the last cpl playoffs when I’ve watched. He’d be an upgrade to a lot of teams for sure.

And yes, the goaltending needs attention. Don’t need a superstar but just some consistency.

I 100% Agree with Your Target Players, but Oilers shouldn't need to give up their 1st for these 2 Players.

Varlomov is a Great Goalie option for the Oilers. Nice thing is NYI wants to dump him to get the Cap Space back for next season, so I could see them taking Koskinen + EDM's 2023-2nd OR Equivalent Prospect and then flipping Koskinen @50% Retained for another 2nd or 3rd Pick/ Prospect, so they gain Assets and get out of Varlomov's contract. With no retention on Koskinen, there's no immediate need to dump Mike Smith (Insurance) who is often injured but can also get Hot, so should only be moved if they need the Cap Space

Unless NYI moves Noah Dobson (doubtful), they won't need/ want Barrie. Only reason they would move Mayfield is for a Premium to gain more Picks/ Young Prospects (likely), so Yamamoto + Perlini and/ or Koekkoek might be sufficient carrots to dangle as opposed to giving up their 1st and exchanging 3rds.

I sincerely hope that Holland is able to pull something off like you describe. It would be great to see that fanbase rewarded. My fear is that it will take 3-4 years to get cap relief, but that they may only have 1-2 years left before EDM's dynamic duo simply want out. Holland is handcuffed by decades of poor management decisions before him. I hope he's able to surprise us all. (Why ownership permitted Chiarelli to tender that ridiculous Koskinen contract 2 days before firing him is simply inexplicable. )

@Chickenfoot. It’s true Chiarelli left them in a bad place but at the same time, Holland has been there long enough, got some relief and then handcuffed himself again.

I love Zach Hyman. As a leaf fan he was so valuable and such a bonus at $2.25M for the last 4 seasons. It’s going to be tougher obviously to be considered a bargain at $5.5M when he’s 29 and a history of injuries now. But he’s a luxury that leafs couldn’t afford and evidently neither could EDM.

How you have $28M in cap space last off season and come back with Koskinen and Smith as your goalies is beyond me. Spending that money on Hyman without upgrading the goaltending was a big mistake. Apparently Holland refused to go above $5M last offseason for Markstrom (elite goaltender in his prime) before he went to CGY for $6M, but have no problem spending $5.5M on zach Hyman (great 3rd liner or 3rd wheel with 2 great players)?

I hope Holland Trades away their 1st, but for a VERY GOOD Piece.

I agree with the sentiments out there that McDavid and Draisaitl will become very disgruntled with EDM's Inconsistent Play and lack of Playoff Success soon. Koskinen, Barrie, Yamamoto, Perlini, Lagesson and Kassian should all be of interest and still have value to other Teams. I say Sell the Farm and attach whatever Picks and Prospects they need to improve the Team to WIN NOW! Worse case scenario, it doesn't work, so they Trade McDavid and/ or Draisaitl and they get all the Picks/ Prospects back (if not even better ones than what they gave up) to rebuild.

My message to Holland would be "Don't Waste McDavid and Draisaitl's Primes Worrying About Tomorrow; Edmonton's Future Is Now! "

Further to @Mob's post, Koskinen went on a tear at the start of the season, going 9-1 and 12-2 with a 0.930Sv%, so Holland could have likely unloaded him for decent value at that point. Should Koskinen have been offered and Chiarelli been authorized to give a $4.5mil/ yr contract, definitely NO, but hind-sight is 20-20, so let's focus on the solution.

Holland's mistakes were mainly at Defense by trading for Duncan Keith @$5.4mil/ yr who he can't re-trade or move AND re-signing Barrie @4.5mil/ yr. But at least Barrie has value and can be moved. I thought Ceci's contract was a bit rich as well.

Holland also failed to upgrade their Bottom-6. I thought Derek Ryan would have been a good addition, but that was a fail. If they're not going to use Perlini, Benson or Sceviour, Trade or Waive them and why is Turris still on the Roster?

Turris, Shore, Ryan, Perlini, Benson, Sceviour, Barrie, Koskinen, Yamamoto and Kassian should all be on the Trade Block. That's a combined $19.375 in Cap Space they could use to Improve their Goaltending, Strengthen their 3rd Pairing D, Bottom-6 Forwards and find a Better Top-6 RW. They also currently have 1.466mil in Cap Space = $20.84mil to potentially work with. Mate them with Picks and Prospects and make the necessary changes already.

The Nugent-Hopkins and Hyman signings at $5.25mil and $5.5mil were great signings IMO and they are certainly earning their contracts.

Once again, the MOB rules. (George Lynch reference. ) 😁

I hear you on the goalie situation vs the Hyman addition. No one understands coming back with Smith. especially for TWO years. I like Hyman, but a starting G as you said was the priority.

EDM is paying out almost 5M this year in next to players who don't play there anymore. Koskinen and Turris remain on the books till this summer, but they also have some RFA's to get done. What a mess! I hope the best for all CDN teams and I hope Holland can fix this right. Otherwise they'll be trading McDavid under pressure next year for whatever they can get and rebuilding again.

@Chickenfoot-So you are aware there's a Salary Cap then. or does it just apply to EDM and not COL? I'm confused.

he Oilers aren't in as bad of a position as you or everyone thinks. There's always ways to turn these things around, they just need to sell their future to do so, but with the assets they already have and could get in return for the ones they bring in, they can tear it all down and very easily replace everything they give up now to begin a healthy rebuild when the time comes.

ARI just did it and didn't even have close to the assets EDM has. With THREE 1st Round Picks + FIVE 2nd Round Picks (and more to come by the TDL) and less than $30mil tied up for next year, they will have $52.5 million to build a new team via Free Agency, Trade and/ or Draft. Too bad they have poor management and won't do it very well, but it's an example of tearing it all down and setting up a complete rebuild.

How many 1st Round Picks or Equivalent Prospects do you think McDavid and Draisaitl will bring back alone in the next 2-4 years? Probably 7 or 8 is my guess.
