How about a Phaneuf for O'Reilly deal? Obviously pieces going both ways (more to avalanche) but I think it would benefit both teams in the near and distant future.

Toronto then signs O'Reilly to a 8 year 6.875M per deal

BerniMac

1.) Avs already lost Stastny so I doubt they're eager to give up another center.

2.) Im sure they would want one back so prob kadri

3.) Why? So they can play on the 3rd line? A d-man make sense but I think they would want a high upside winger back

4.) 12 Jul 2014 18:32:52
yea COL doesn't have a problem with losing another C. Duchene - mackinnon - talbot - (idk) lol is still very strong

5.) Sure they'll trade ROR for Phaneuf. Could easily get a better return.

6.) 13 Jul 2014 06:47:25
@ATH Hockey

That's likely true, but how many teams are currently shopping their #1 defenseman? Just Toronto. Colorado needs Defense just as desperately as Toronto needs the Centre. Value might not be equal, but it's the best fit that has the final say in a deal

7.) Leafs aren't shopping Phaneuf, he's merely "available." Big difference. And he's been available for quite a while now so if a deal happens, I would expect pieces coming back and not something along the lines of a 1-for-1 deal. Sounds like there is some mild interest in him, but no one is prepared to give up top-tier players for him. He's not as good as his contract suggests, I don't care how you frame it.

Just an idea.

Toronto trades David Clarkson to Philadelphia for Vincent Lecavalier?

No retained salary, just a straight 1 for 1 trade.

Both players obviously need a change and didn't live up to expectations in their respective clubs. Clarkson is younger and plays the Philly style game so it might count as an incentive to the flyers to take the chance on him

Meanwhile the leafs get a big centre that would likely play 2nd line minutes and time on the PP to rack up more points and add a leadership quality that toronto is trying to create in the dressing room

Then sign Carcillo and trade Franson, Holland and Biggs to Edm for Darnell Nurse

JvR Bozak Kessel
Lupul Lecavalier Kadri
Komarov Kontiola Frattin
Carcillo Santorelli Bodie

Phaneuf Nurse
Gardiner Robidas
Reilly Polak

Bernier
Reimer

1.) Zero chance that Edmonton trade happens. It doesn't help Edmonton at all and really wrecks their future plans because Nurse is projecting to be a very solid dman. Bits and pieces are not what Edmonton needs at all.

2.) 05 Jul 2014 12:43:57
The EDM trade is a joke, Nurse is going to be a stud.
Philly won't trade 4 yrs of 4.5 for 6 yrs of 5.25, and Vinny is still better than DC

3.) Nurse won't be a stud but yeh still a bad trade for the oilers

4.) Lecavalier hasn't been the same ever since he was traded to the Flyers. Trust me, the Flyers love big players that can score (eg. Simmonds, Voracek). If Lecavalier could bring that, he wouldn't be on the trade market.

5.) Nurse won't be a stud, but Gardiner and Rielly are, right Charles? Where's an eye-roll emoticon when you need one

Not much left for toronto to do

Bernier
Brodeur

1.) Peg says no. It's merely Franson's rights, Holland (decent last season, far from established as an NHLer tho), and Reimer's rights (his value is very low right now because he had a bad season and there are too many goalies available). Oh, and the ever-valuable 2nd round pick.

Winnipeg isn't trading a top-2 dman for a handful of maybes.

2.) 04 Jul 2014 22:52:57
Those "rights" have a lot of value, do you know what fra means? ~ google

3.) Buff and dion together? Lordy that would be a sight, two confused football players slamming into each other and giving perfect one-timer passes to the wrong team.

4.) Those rights have a lot of value? Dan Boyle's rights, one of the most sought-after dmen available during this free agency, went for a 5th round pick. Yes, Franson and Reimer are RFAs and not UFAs but both are coming off not-so-great seasons and it's no secret that Reimer wants out of Toronto. Franson is a bottom-4 dman, Reimer is currently considered a decent backup after a poor season. Holland is a decent 3rd line C, or a weak 2nd line C. You highly overestimate their value, likely because you are looking at the situation through rose-colored leafs fan glasses. They are not the valuable trade chips you think they are, especially without contracts already attached to them.

5.) 05 Jul 2014 18:47:30
like I said chirp, google rfa.

6.) Actually you said google fra, but that's beside the point. I know what an RFA is, I know that they'd then have their rights, but that means nothing. Players have held out as RFAs before and not signed with the teams that hold their rights. Look at Turris in Phoenix. And the Isles are a team that has difficulty drawing players in. Visnovsky almost sought a legal team to overturn his trade there. The Isles have zero use for Reimer. Franson, for the right price, they could use but that's not getting you Byfuglien.

Possible Phaneuf landing spots

There's been rumours that Phaneufs name has been seriously looked at by the Sharks, Hurricanes and the Islanders. Some ideas I have and would like to see happen

Sharks- From what I've read the Sharks really covet Phaneuf and would love to add him to there mix with the recent departures of Boyle and Stuart

Pavelski for Phaneuf, Tyler Biggs and a 3rd round pick in 2016

Or

Couture for Phaneuf, Broll, Ross, 2016 2nd

Hurricanes- Read that they are interested in Dion as well

Eric Staal (1M retained) for Phaneuf and Carter Ashton

Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk for Dion Phaneuf, Percy, Biggs and 2016 2nd

Islanders

Ryan Strome and Griffin Reinhart for Phaneuf, Biggs, Valiev and a 2nd in 2016

~You never know with Garth Snow~

Anyway I just want the leafs to trade Dion and pick a new captain that can help them win!

BerniMac

1.) All trades favor the leafs soooo badly. Pavelski is an underrated star, he ain't going anywhere. Couture is their future, he isn't going anywhere.

E. Staal is a possibility but unlikely without including an nhl forward in return.

The Hurricanes are never giving up Faulk and/or Skinner. They are young and the future.

The islanders are not giving up their top prospects.

So ya Phaneuf won't get you these, even if you toss in c level prospects.

This is from a leaf fan.

2.) You highly, highly overvalue Phaneuf.

3.) As a leaf fan I don't know what anyone has ever seen in Ashton. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sharks were after Phaneuf but I think Thornton or Marleau would be in the deal instead of Pavelski or Couture.

4.) 17 Jul 2014 02:30:40
skinner with his injury is widely known to be far from untouchable

5.) ^ Leaf fans overvalue Phaneuf, non-Leaf fans under-value him, that's pretty much how this dance goes.

As for the post - none of those trades really make sense. Thorton and a depth d-man from SJS, J. Staal and a depth d-man from Carolina and just Reinhart and maybe another prospect make more sense. But I doubt either team makes that trade.

I've said this before and I will say it again, a Phaneuf trade is all about the "right" team. IN any trade Toronto is likely going to have to take back salary and/or retain salary. But once the economics are worked out, a decent prospect, a roster player and a draft pick is likely what Toronto would get back.

Nick bonino, Luca Sbisa and the 24th pick for Kesler and a 3rd

Haha nucks fans I thought Kesler was fetching the 10th, 24th and a prospect!

I distinctly remember posting this exact trade a week ago. The only difference is that I was flooded with negative comments and many unbelievable clicks. I still hope the trade happens though

6'5" Right handed defensemen that lead the league in hits and still pop over 30 points playing on the 2nd pairing are worth much more than a mid 2nd round pick

The leafs will sign Franson hopefully to a 5 year deal in the range of 3.5M to 4M per year
