It's not a matter of straight up value buddy and this has been said and said over and over again yes the leafs would probably come out on top of this deal no matter what and it may look like the leafs win big but Carolina walks away from one if not two contracts that are killing them cap wise
So let's say for arguments sake that this is the trade
Semin + skinner + 5th overall
Phaneuf/Kessel either or + 24th overall + mid level prospect
Semin has no value and don't say he does he is 7mil dollars a year so your basically swapping semin with a bad contract Jeff skinner who is like lupul talented beyond belief but injured so much that it hurts the cap and the 5 th pick for phaneuf [ who could fetch a late first, a good prospect, and a roster player ] or Kessel [ who could easily fetch an early 10-15 1st rd pick, a top end prospect , and a good roster player] and the 24th pick it's not like your moving out of the first round

Hearing rumours buffalo is interested in O'Reilly, and may be willing to give up their 1st round pick (Stl or Nyi) I think the Avs would want more then a 1st for ROR and could use a guy like Bogosian in the top 4.

1.) Murray is very high on BoGo that's why he was willing to give up Myers. Him Risto and Zads are off the table now Myers is gone. I think Murray's best offer for O'reilly now is Grigorenko, our other 1st and one of Pysyk and McCabe possibly another prospect. Murray is trying to make this a quick rebuild trading BoGo leaves us with a huge hole
2.) @Drownedfish IMO the way Bogo is playing Murray would want more just for Bogosian.
@sabres14 this is O'Reilly who avg .55 pts/gm. IMO your offer is not far from what is needed to interest Nonis to trade Kessel, I assure you Nonis would not trade Kessel for O'Reilly.
To both, with it looking like Buffalo will draft either McDavid or Eichel and Reinhart, Grigorenkko, Girgensons, Ennis (and even Hodgson) on the team, just why give up so much of O'Reilly? If the idea is to play him at left wing, will he play instead of Moulson or Kane, or Foligno or Deslauriers? I would rather have Moulson or Kane on the top two lines or Foligno or Deslauriers on the bottom two lines instead of giving up any of the players mentioned in this trade.
3.) Why is it that Edmonton and Buffalo suck so bad with all the talent they have. sbr2017 just made a strong case on how O'RIELLY isn't good enough to be on the team. Yet we still get last 😩
4.) The idea with O'reilly is that he would play centre for a year or so cause I'm sure Murray doesn't want his top 3 centres to be under 21 next year. Eventually either he or Kane would shift to their off wing. A couple years from now the line of:
Kane - Reinhart/ McEichel - O'reilly
Looks pretty dirty to me. O'reilly is just having an off season I think all the contract issues may be getting to him. But the guy is a beast. He works extremely hard throughout the year. I really hope Murray doesn't give up one of our three core defencemen (BoGo, Zads, Risto) to get him tho. That would really hurt our D for a long time. I still think he gave up too much in the Kane deal but it's too early to tell I guess
5.) @Oilers_11 because Buffalo has the dumbest coach and Edmonton the worse management in the league. Nolan is starting to put together better lines but earlier in the year he would put all lefts or rights on the same line and have a line without a natural center. Actually, I said it would be better to keep the players than to trade for O'Reiley, unless Murray is thinking of trading the 1st overall! Then trade for ROR for the #2C, Reinhart #1C, and Girgensons #3C.
6.) @sabres14 just remember 3-20 goal per year players is not worth 1-40 goal per year player. Look at the Hockeyfutures and see where Armia and Lemieux rank with WIN prospects. I felt the same as you at first then reflected and realized that Brandon was slated to be a good bottom 6 forward and Armia at best a #2 RW. Last year's draft was not very strong and 2nd round picks seldom become 1st line players. The 2011 draft also seems to be a weak draft, just look at all of the 1st round disappointments from that draft. Remember ROR is left handed, I am not sure if he can play RW. As I said, what if Murray plans on trading the 1st over all (see the trade below with the TML) then ROR becomes #2C.
7.) How often do you see teams trading away players with the talent of McEichel. You don't trade away generational talent like McEichel and as good as O'reilly is he's no where near the talent of that of those two. Look at the production of even Eichel in his draft year compared to other NHL stars that came from college. Eichel has better PPG production than likes of Toews, Parise, Kessel, Pacioretty list goes on. There's only 2 players in College history to have better production than Eichel and those are St. Louis and Kariya who both played in a much different time. If Murray trades our pick he should be fired immediately

1.) Don't see why sharks add a first
2.) We said we want to get younger. We said we won't be trading a first round pick unless we're getting a higher first round pick back. So why would we trade our first in a package for Chara? It's not like we want him at all.
3.) Boston politely hangs up. after they stop laughing long enough.

Rangers are really risking their future by trading arguably their best prospect and no first for 2 rounders , however it's clear they want to win now. I like this trade from Arizona point although losing Yandle hurts.

So an interesting trade happend today.
Leafs traded - David Clarkson
Jackets traded - Nathan Horton
I don't know where to start with this. I understand clarkson has an awful contract but wouldn't you rather have him over a guy with a wonky back who may never play again? He's definantly not worth his contract but I mean he still seems like a good 3rd/4th liner.
How do you leaf fans feel about this trade? I feel CBJ won.
Also how does it work that Horton makes like 5 mil but since he's on LTIR does he count toward cap?
1.) This is a purely economical trade. CBJ did not want to pay Horton to sit at home, while Toronto was more than willing to pay him and take the additional cap space.
2.) The leafs basically bought out Clarkson without him counting against the cap.
Its pure economics. Hortons career is over and he won't count against the cap. He will never suit up as a maple leaf. Just like Savard with Boston and Pronger with Philly.
