TOR: Phaneuf (500k retained), Granberg, 24th overall 2015, 5th rounder in 2016.
Avalanche: Ryan O'Rielly, 3rd round pick 2016 (we can give one to red wings for Babcock).
Draft either Strome or Marner at centre
Trade bozak for a top 6 defender and pick.
Sign ROR for around 5 years 6-6.5 mil.
JVR-ROR-Kessel would be a sweet first line.
Kadri, Strome/Marner are the other centres.
Have Babcock really get the most out of prospects and have them compete for the bottom 6 fwd lines and botton 4 defence lines.

If you reduce Phaneuf's salary (considering he is overpaid but still an effective top 3 d-man)) AND you take back salary, you're effectively neutralizing the negative side of his trade value. At that point the need to compensate more (i.e. adding more from Toronto and/or taking less from the other team) becomes unnecessary.
In other words, I could see a Phaneuf for O'Reilly in some form, but I am Not sure Toronto adds a 1st.
