Montreal Trades
Weber*

Toronto Trades
6th Round Pick 2023

*Montreal retains 110k of Weber's remaining contract.

This is a Cap Trade to clear out over 7.5m for The Leafs on LTIR loophole, to retain 110k is really nothing for Montreal but huge for Toronto to not be over The Cap.

Thoughts ?

I don't know how all that crap works, however, in no way should the Habs do anything to help the Leafs.

There are other teams to take Webers contract.

can't see them doing it to bail out leafs' self inflicted mistakes.

I have proposed MTL-TOR trades, but help was balanced with a realistic but meaningful return. No way MTL bails out their divisional rivals for a 6th. A divisional opponent pays more.

For anyone saying no way Montreal bails out The Leafs, its both Teams bailing each other out, there aren't to many Teams that could take on the remainder of Weber's contract, with Toronto having more money than any other Team they are one of the few that can do this, so before anyone says no way think about Montreal having to payout that contract for multiple years, it helps both Teams.

The habs not accepting this trade woulf be horrible asset management. I’m sure the GMs of each team don’t hate eachother. No reason not to do this. The owner can use the extra cash to buy his dog a 24 caret gold diamond coated collar.

Welln regardless Pinball, I'd rather suffer a lil bit than do the Leafs any favor.

I wonder what the cap recapture penalty would be to the 3 teams, Nashville, Montreal and Toronto, if Weber decided to retire in a year or 2 into this trade.

2 things. First off you would have to calculate the cap recapture as Reindrag said.

Secondly, the Habs would want more than a 6th to do this. You make it sound like they’re paying out $7.6M cash a year. Shea Weber’s contract was insured against injuries like this. Each policy is different so I don’t know the exact number, but most players with long term deals like his are insured somewhere in the 80-90% range.

So that means that the Habs are actually paying him probably somewhere between $750k-$1.5M out of pocket.

You do not accept a 6th round pick, to avoid a salary that insignificant while gracing a rival with $7.5M cap space. There just isn’t nearly enough reason to do it.

If Weber retired, the full cap hit reverts to Nashville.

(Similar to Luongo retiring rather than staying on LTIR. It helped Florida, and the Cap hit reverted to Vancouver. For example, VCR still has a dead cap hit of 3.035M from Luongo's retirement, but at least this is the last year. )

If the player retires, they don't receive any more money owing from the contract, so Weber has about 6M reasons not to change his mind on that. )

If Weber retire, the penalty is humongous for Nashville, they should try to acquire the contract to keep control on it.

The player has no incentive to retire, so there is no risk to NSH. Luongo retired because he was more loyal to FLA than VCR, and rightfully so in my books.
