Montreal: Jeff Petry, 1st 2020

Toronto: Tyson Barrie, Jeremy Bracco, Cody Ceci

Gives Montreal a top 10 offensive defenceman and power play quarterback, a promising young playmaker who could fit in well on they PP as well. They take Ceci so salary works.

Leafs get a solid RD with a bit more term in Petry and add a first round pick in a stacked draft class. It would signify them kind of throwing in the towel, but it could be beneficial in the long run.

Who adds/subtracts?

CWGS

1.) 06 Dec 2019 08:10:41
A top 10 offensive defenseman? I don’t see Reilly anywhere in this proposal.

Montreal won’t take two UFA’s and AHL lifer for Petry and a 1st.

2.) 06 Dec 2019 08:19:43
why would toronto downgrade from barrie to petry? like legit just for more term?

3.) 06 Dec 2019 15:08:43
Petry is a downgrade from Barrie is he? Not this year he ain’t. They don’t just get a little more term, they also unload Ceci and gain a 1st.

4.) 06 Dec 2019 16:24:57
Downgrade? Barrie is a liability on defence with no term. I also don't see Bracco and Ceci being worth a 1st.

5.) 06 Dec 2019 17:57:47
Two divisional rivals RARELY make a trade mid season, and when they do its HIGHLY UNLIKELY that the trade will involve one of the two teams getting fleeced.

Why would Toronto gift Montreal with their best AND worst right handed defencemen AND a B prospect for an overpaid right hander who comes into the locker room with ZERO (0) chemistry with anyone on the team?

Answer: They wouldn't.

6.) 06 Dec 2019 19:05:54
I'll keep Petry and the 1st. Habs say no in my opinion.

02 Dec 2019 04:54:30
MTL: Keith Kinkaid, 2nd 2019

TOR: Michael Hutchinson, Cody Ceci, Nic Petan

Bad goalie for bad goalie swap. Habs boost their lacklustre defence and add a great offensive depth forward in Petan. Leafs get some cap space to do some more work. Habs have cap space to spare and it doesn't affect their long term plans at all.

Thoughts?

CWGS

1.) 02 Dec 2019 11:50:54
so hutch = kinkaid
2nd = ceci + petan?
a bit off. as much as i like ceci and petan i don't think they'd bring in a 2nd.

2.) 02 Dec 2019 15:15:37
Petan is a great offensive forward? Did I miss something?

3.) 02 Dec 2019 15:24:42
What’s the point of the goalie swap anyway? Leafs would still have to go find a good goalie again.

01 Dec 2019 05:50:40
Before you all freak, I know this would never happen, but who would needs to add?

TOR: Matt Dumba, Jonas Brodin, Kevin Fiala

MIN: Morgan Reilly, Cody Ceci (just cap and helps Min tank, his value is basically 0 in this situation), Jeremy Bracco, Kasperi Kapanen

The Wild suck an are getting really old. It would probably be beneficial to try and get things for the players they already have. I realize that they're getting rid of some young pieces, but they're also gaining valuable young assets in Bracco, Reilly, and Kapanen. The Leafs gain some control over defacemen in the long run and add a speedy LW, something that they're lacking.

Fiala could also get dropped from the trade as well as Kapanen. In that case the leafs would have to add something decent.

After that essay, thoughts?

CWGS

1.) 01 Dec 2019 20:00:55
The leafs aren’t trading Rielly are you nuts.

2.) 02 Dec 2019 01:13:51
Reilly is arguably a much better player than Dumba. With such a great contract, Dumba will be expensive in trade value for sure. But you can bet that it would be coming from the Leafs offense rather than their defense.

3.) 02 Dec 2019 12:51:07
Huge no from leafs they’re giving up the best player by far and better Forward. They’re trying to win now.

15 Oct 2019 03:25:11
NJD: Roman Josi, Jusse Saros

NASH: Taylor Hall, Mackenzie Blackwood

I feel like there is a swap possibility there. UFA swap plus the Devils get a goalie. Devils get better goalie because Hall is younger and worth more than Josi.

CWGS

1.) 15 Oct 2019 08:32:40
Nashville won't part with Josi

2.) 15 Oct 2019 15:34:20
Ya, don't think there's a chance josi gets traded.

3.) 15 Oct 2019 15:57:41
I think Preds say no, they need Josi more than Hall at the moment.

Also Saros is the more NHL ready goalie who is the heir apparent to Rinne. Not sure they can wait for Blackwood as Rinne will likely be done in a year or 2 (Or at least not be full time starter and a 1B role)

The value might be close but still think Preds pass for different reasons.

4.) 15 Oct 2019 18:42:41
Josi has more value than Hall and Saros has more value than Blackwood. No from Nashville.

5.) 16 Oct 2019 02:18:29
If Nashville trades Josi, that once formidable blueline would be down to just Ekholm and Ellis. No from Nashville, they need Josi, and Josi's better than Hall.

6.) 16 Oct 2019 10:41:27
Isn’t Josi their captain? From what I’ve heard, they are set to make Josi a huge offer. $8+ a season.

7.) 17 Oct 2019 17:48:12
There is no way Josi signs anything close to 8 million. Paniran is a nice comparable.

8.) 17 Oct 2019 22:29:12
How is Panarin comparable? He’s a forward. Josi is a defenseman. And not a Norris trophy winning one either.

25 Jun 2019 20:12:00
TOR: Mitch Marner, Nikita Zaitsev, 2nd 2020

VAN: Brock Boeser, Quinn Hughes

Just cause people are posting Canucks to Leafs rumours I figured I'd give a semi reasonable one.

Is this closer than Petterson and Hughes for Marner?

CWGS

1.) 25 Jun 2019 21:36:33
Values probably closer but i couldn't see any world where 2 younger cheaper assests would be traded to a rebuilding team for marner. It just opens up more holes in an incomplete team.

2.) 26 Jun 2019 00:12:17
Yah value isn’t terrible I’ll admit I exaggerated in my last proposal/ value gauger to prove Marner is worth a little bit more then Pettersson. This trade value wise is pretty close.

3.) 26 Jun 2019 06:01:03
Difference between Boeser and Marner is not Canucks taking a horrible contract and sending a blue chip prospect to TOR.

4.) 26 Jun 2019 11:07:12
The_Triplets I think you really underrate Marner who would you say he has about equal value to in the league.

5.) 26 Jun 2019 15:11:05
You guys are smoking something I swear lmao, this isn’t even close.

Zaitsev’s contract kills any value that 2nd had and Marner doesn't get you Boeser and Hughes, he doesn’t get you Pettersson and Hughes, he doesn’t get you Pettersson and Boeser, he doesn’t get you Horvat and ‘insert player here’, okay, stop with these stupid proposals. Marner isn’t the greatest player to lace them up and he definitely doesn’t get you 2 star players. **** off with this rubbish.

6.) 26 Jun 2019 15:19:23
It's hard to gauge his value when he has no contract. If he signs for $9.5 he would be unreal! If he signs for $11.5 it would make a big difference.
I know Kucherov signed his deal but has a completely different tax situation. But playing in Toronto has a different opportunity to make money as well in advertising and marketing. That could help bridge the gap.

I posted something similar like a week ago and thought I might change it up a bit.

Leafs: Auston Matthews, Andreas Johnsson (and/or) Kasperi Kapanen, 1st round pick some year?

Edmonton Oilers: Connor McDavid, Milan Lucic, Jesse Puljujarvi

I know this would never happen, but it's kind of (maybe?) realistic and entertaining. It would also be insane. Leafs may get to keep one of Johnsson or Kapanen. You could also argue throwing in Zaitsev or Brown on top of this.

What do you think?

CWGS

1.) 09 Apr 2019 02:03:26
I think the biggest challenge facing the Leafs (and Tampa, Winnipeg, etc. ) is the salary cap and trying to pay (keep) your stars but also surround them with a good enough supporting cast to be able to compete for a championship for as long as possible. To do so, every dollar of cap space needs to be used efficiently. As good as McDavid is, Lucic is pure dead weight at this point (and frankly, one of the reasons Edmonton missed the playoffs again despite having the best player in the world and a 50 goal scorer in Draisaitl) . Unless there was a guaranteed way to bury/ rid yourself of that contract, it’s almost like what’s the point.

2.) 09 Apr 2019 05:31:12
Leafs would have to add Sandin, or Lillegren. and maybe more. I've watched quite a few Oilers and Leafs games. there is a larger gap between McDavid and Mathews than I originally thought.
As much as it would be great to add a player like McDavid, best for Leafs to stay the course, they are miles ahead of Edmonton with what they have, Tavares as number one Center, Mathews as 2nd line Ctr. pretty damn good. would have to alter the team to much to get McDavid.

Okay Leafs Nation, we need to chill. William Nylander is a damn good hockey player who is going to be on a damn good contract in the future. Yes, he has struggled for the first month that he has played, but remember, it's only been a month and a half since he started playing in the NHL again. Nylander's contract is very good and will be considered in the same conversation as Pastas deal is today. So stop trying to trade him for a bunch of scrubs. The Leafs have some very good up and coming prospects in Liljegren and Sandin (who probably won't be traded either). Chill out for a bit. Give him some time. And just breath. The worst case scenario for the Leafs is that they lose Gardiner, which is okay. Dermott is going to be good and Rosen looks very promising as well. We have a bright future and this year isn't the only year they can win. The Leafs will be competitors for years to come. Trust me.

CWGS

1.) 25 Jan 2019 05:08:51
And all it took was a win over the worse team in the league ATM. nah just kidding lol most of what you said is true.

2.) 25 Jan 2019 07:09:23
I don’t think anyone said Nylander is not a good hockey player. We all know the leafs need defense. With the leafs depth at forward and the cap situation coming, Nylander would be the guy I’d trade for a top defenseman. Also, nobody was trading him for scrubs (Parayko, Trouba, Pietrangalo) . In case you haven’t been following along, leaf fans get accused of the exact opposite. I personally would take Kapanen over Nylander as he’ll demand much less money and works his ass off. Yes the leafs will lose Gardiner. Yes the leafs will be competitors for years to come, we trust you.

I doubt this would happen buts it's an idea I had.

Leafs: JVR, Bozak, pick, and/ or prospect

Avalanche: One of Duchene, Barrie, or Johnson.

Toronto would be beyond stupid to do this. Kappy is only 23, has some of the best wheels in the game, and is a pretty decent penalty killer. They don't need a goalie who is overpaid and below average.

No way in a million years Toronto makes that trade. Weber is going to drop off very soon and very hard and his contract is one of the worst in hockey. Nylander is a very good player with a very good contract. The Leafs need defenceman next year, but not that bad.

What should the leafs add to make it more fair? Would a first do it? Or would it have to be someone like Kapanen/Johnnson?

That's why I said after July 1st. This would happen only if Panarin signs somewhere else. It's unlikely but I think it's got potential. Especially given the fact that Florida could use him as a "big name" (Even though he isn't that big anymore) to please fans.

@TyBa4

1. He'd want to go back to Toronto to win 2. He wouldn't have a choice cause I would assume Toronto is not one of the 8 teams on his no-trade list. Kadri and Brown are basically the equivalent of Kessel's salary, and Kessel is a top RW in the league which Toronto would love to have. He's on the third line because Matthews is a scorer and putting two snipers on one line wouldn't work, Nylander is more of a playmaker and would probably work well with Kessel.
