As Leafs fans we must be prepare for not much in the trade scene. What we have is not what other teams want or at least won't give Leafs fair value. The players Leafs want to move won't bring back enough talent. Maybe draft picks.

Not true we have a few players with good value that could be moved

Unfortunately the players with good value Leaf want to keep. Phaneuf will be under valued as will Kadri. Leafs will have to over pay to move these players. Probably better to keep them. I hear JVR name mentioned and I want no part of that.

^ To suggest that Toronto won't trade anyone bc no other team wants what Toronto has is more than a little offside.

With this said, any trades will be more focused on cutting salary. Gleason, Clarkson, Lupul and to a lesser extent Phaneuf would likely all be moved if it were possible. Clarkson would be extremely tough to move (Toronto would have to move him as part of package with a player with big upside). Same with Gleason to a lesser extent, though I think Toronto could move him to a team that needs D help. Lupul has value, but I doubt Toronto would get back another top six forward, so does it even make sense to move him?

IMO Phaneuf has a lot of trade value, but to the right team. And it's highly unlikely that Toronto will get back a D-man in that trade (or at least one that can contribute at a level close to what Phaneuf does), so in that respect it's a tough trade to make.

Phanuef has trade value if you retain a lot of salary. At $7mil, his value is limited. But he won't be traded anyway.

What I tried to say was that any players Leaf will want to Trade have major issues (Huge Salary & Cap hit, Long contract Etc. )
Clarkson is unmovable but he may find himself in Toronto, No one will take that chance.
I think anyone interested in Phaneuf will want Leafs to retain or won't give value as he has Baggage!
What is Gleason really worth? Not Much!
Lupul, injury prone and won't bring much back, so keep him.
I don't think trading the kids is the answer.

So leafs may make trades but they won't appear to win many of them.

Your thoughts?

^ I think the likelihood of trading any of those listed players is unlikely (even of the conditions were perfect) bc trades aren't all that common. The only point I was making was that those players could be traded but in very specific circumstances
