Dion Phaneufs Contract is not untradeable!

The NHL is a salary cap league and the salary cap just went up 10 million, and will continue to rise consistently every year as the league grows.

the last 7 years he has made $6. 5, which is 10. 8% of the salary cap.

With his new 7 million salary he makes 10% of the salary cap. as his deal moves forward and the salary cap rises that % will keep going down.

Defencemen are in high demand and he would have received a lot more had he hit FA.

His new deal is less % of the cap then it was before and expires when he is 36 years old which is very reasonable.

The fact of the matter is this, everyone who thinks he is untradeable, you are a lost soul and I am not going to even have a conversation with some uneducated garbage man who doesn't understand simple economics and supply and demand. Dions Contract is market value and his contract is not in the same category as horcoff, Richards, wideman, Clarkson.

Toronto will have no issue moving dion if they choose to, especially this offseason where no other defensemen are on the market.

They may not even trade him, An alternative may be to find him a partner to help take the load off, look how bowmister re vamped his image after he went to st. louis.

FLA, EDM, Philly, SJS are all teams that are perusing him. No shortage of suitors.

I've read from more reliable people than you that Florida, Edmonton, Philly, and especially SJ are NOT pursuing Phaneuf. You leafs fans will just make up anything these days.

Well clearly you are the one who is unable to have rational conversation with others not the other way around. Take a breath stop crying and if you actually follow hockey you would know that they all say his contract is not easy to move as no one wants it. He is getting paid way more then he should as he is not in the doughty, Subban, weber ect contracts. He is not in the top 20 in the league yet gets paid for a top 8 dman, so you can make all the "economics" you want to make yourself sleep but the fact is not a lot of teams want him (as people in the game have said and stated he has a bad contract) but the ones who do, tor would have to add more to make up for that contract just to get rid of him. So your leafs lose no matter what

People aren't going to trade for phaneuf when he's playing the way he did in the last few weeks even months, especially at 7m. He's not the guy to anchor your defense but he would be an awesome addition to a good defenseman on the first pairing. Put him with a Keith or vlasic etc and he looks much better.

You're right in the sense that Phaneuf and his contract is/are untradeable. However, he isn't going to bring back a return that matches his skill level. Just like the Luongo trade (Luongo, Anthony for Matthias, Markstrom). A #1 Elite goalie traded for a 3rd/4th liner and a backup goalie. Also luongo's contract is $5. 33/year for 9 more years. Also Vancouver is retaining $800,000 for the rest of his contract. So for a Dman who at his best is a #2, who also has been known to be inconsistent, will realistically bring you back two of the following:
-Bottom 6 player
-6/7 Dman
-Back up goalie

Phaneuf isn't going to bring you back a 1st round pick, a top forward or defenseman or a starting goalie.

Phaneuf will be packaged in a deal to land the first overall pick.

Trade Phaneuf for a any 1st and a 2nd or what ever it takes.
Free up $ 7 mil/per and we need a 2nd.
This is "Cultural Change"
Use Phanuef's $ 7 Mil for 2 defencemen, and play the kids.
Carlyle's signing was a mistake, but that may be solved by mid-season.
