Here is a thought:

Detroit had a bad off-season. The best was re-signing key young guys of the future.

Now for Detroit switching over to youth is Vital but at the same time you want to have that balance of veterans and youth which makes some of these cup contenders today.

My idea:
First Detroit signs Dekeyser and Tatar.

Also see if you can get Nyquist an Extension by a year or two so there is no worry right now.

Alfie must retire although he put up points and has a right-handed shot. We got to change.

After this upcoming season we must let Babcock go, he is a great coach but sometimes you need a new voice to inspire players. The replacement I have in mind is Jeff Blashill who coached Grand Rapids Griffins. He fits well, knows the system and knows how to use the young kids and play to their advantages.

That is the plan behind the bench in the future now time to look at making the Transition.

Leave everything as is and don't make any moves until deadline. As nice at it would be for Detroit to get a stud like Tyler Myers it will cost too much.

Now here's a deadline trade that may be reasonable and seem outrageous but if you look at needs it works perfectly.

Detroit Trades:
Weiss, 2nd, and maybe ok prospect

Washington Trades:
Mike Green and Conditional 5th that becomes 3rd if doesn't re-sign.

Reasons behind Trade:
Washington has 9 plus D and Green is moving on out. They lost Grabovski and need a guy who can be a 2nd line C. Weiss can do that.
Both players are injury-prone so there is risk to both sides. Due to Weiss having constant injury problems Detroit adds. However, I added a condition to Washington based on Green's risk of not resigning.

This gives Detroit a top four D with Right hand that they need and clears some roster space up front.

Also to Clear more space Detroit moves Quincey and Cleary to other teams for picks or prospects.

New Line-up
Mantha-Datsyuk-Tatar
Nyquist-Zetterberg-Franzen
Abdelklader-Helm-Jurco
Miller-Andersson/Glenndenning-Sheahan

Kronwall-Ericsson
Dekeyser-Green
Smith-Kindl
Ex. Lashoff

Howard
Gustavsson

Ex. Mrazek

Youth needs to come in so give Datsyuk and Zetterberg some youth to play with.

Agree for all that depth

I don't understand how you could want to let a coach like Babcock go. He is the best coach in the league and one of the best of all time. I would understand getting a new coach when the system isn't working but Detroit will be strong in the next few years. I can't see mantha coming out of junior and stepping right into the top line. Other then that rest made sense

Sorry your borderline delusional if u think ANY team wants Weiss at almost 5 Mil per year!! But I agree Green would wheel and flourish in hockeytown.

Agree with Soobydoo. Letting Babcock go would be the worst thing Detroit could do. You can't be the best team in the league every year. They have had some big injury problems the past couple years to key players. Unfortunately, I think Detroit will be among the elite again in a couple years. Unless of course they get rid of Babcock and the leafs get him

The trade will never work weiss' contract is too bad to get value back u would be lucky to trade Weiss for a 7th round pick
