Because things are not looking so good for Lindholm to resign thought of two trades

To Columbus
Elias Lindholm

To Calgary
Cole Sillinger
Denton Mateychuk
Andrew Peeke
2023 2nd Round 34th Overall

OR

To Detroit
Elias Lindholm

To Calgary
Carter Mazur
William Wallinder
2023 1st Round 17th Overall
2023 2nd Round 43rd Overall

Are these overpayments? Both trades would be assumed that he would sign extensions with both teams

Yes, these are HUGE overpayment. The return for Lindholm would probably be far less. Detroit would politely say "no thank you", as would Columbus to these proposals.

It’s always fascinating to watch a rookie GM make their first deal. Will they make a “rookie deal” and earn a poor return, or will they show unforeseen wisdom that earned them the GM job in the first place?

The CGY ownership model is challenging since you have so many owners that impede and interfere with the decision-making process. Was Conroy chosen because he’s a “good guy” who was liked by most for his long service to the organization, or is he actually the keen intellectual who will help reset a club who is in choppy waters after failing to act on Sutter and losing Treliving?

I can’t wait to see the first trade Conroy makes. Maybe it’ll be a good one, but I can’t help but think CGY blew it by losing an experienced GM like Treliving.

Either way, it’s going to be interesting to see he manages a situation where so many key players want out, and every other GM is waiting to pounce and take advantage of a rookie GM.

Debate all you want, Lindholm has been and still is one of the most underrated players in the NHL.
The Flames will do their best to sign him. They obviously need more on their team, but he is a keeper. If nothing else, they want other teams to think that.

The results from NHL trades and drafts are mixed at best, but Lindholm completing one of the best first lines in the league with Gaudreau and Laine is about as sure as it gets.
I could easily see the discussion with the Jackets starting with Sillinger and that early 2nd, but don’t think that’s nearly enough for the Flames.
