If Matthews won't commit, Leafs decide they can't lose him for nothing as UFA, and deal him to western conference team before his nmc kicks in. This pkg provides quality futures while allowing Leafs to remain competitive.
Would Matthews sign long term in Southern Cal for Mackinnon money? Why not?
Leafs would want Zegras, but that may be non-starter for Ducks, especially if Matthews is unsigned, so then it becomes Ducks outbidding other teams with a pkg like above. But, since Matthews is a superstar, what do the Kings, Sharks, Preds, Blues, and Hawks offer?
A scenario like this could potentially play out this offseason, rather than AZ as they seem to have too many loose ends to take on a player like Matthews right now.
Other teams have quality pending ufa's too.

If he doesn't agree to extend, they would be stupid to keep him. They need assurances from him he is staying otherwise let the league know he is available.
On the trade, keep Gibson and Henrique. Would rather young players. Mactavish, Terry and one of there young d prospects would be a start.

Vb, if you let an asset like Matthews just walk that cripples organizations. Very poor asset management. Balsam, a player like Matthews would command alot. I was using that as an example. Some teams would pay a ton for a chance at him.

Main thing I had in mind besides futures was Leafs addressing their net. Ie: they could face Vasilevskiy in the upcoming first round and they would be clearly overmatched in that phase of the game. Gibson is one of the few true #1 goalies rumoured to be available. Henrique is underrated. But yeah, younger is preferred in the nhl.

Can’t speak for everyone, but all I’m doing is presenting interesting speculation, and certainly not guaranteeing anything.
What I can tell you is that if there’s anything Leafs and their fans might fear more than not winning the cup, it’s the years of desolation that have followed mismanagement, such as perennially trading away top picks/ prospects and letting stars age with ntc’s or walk for nothing. Yes, their arena will still be full, but, as history shows, the angst and irrelevance becomes the mark of the franchise.

Not saying trading mathews opposed to letting him walk as a UFA wouldn’t be good asset management but I am saying there is absolutely zero chance he is traded so the discussion is moot. Dubas will be back next year with the same core 1st round exit or not. That I can promise.
I don’t think that’s interesting speculation at all interesting speculation would be the leafs signing a player like Nyquist in the offseason and trading for a player like Braydon Schenn because that’s realistic. Not trading Mathews, Nylander, etc.

Vb, I never said they are trading Matthew's. I said if they dont get any assurances from Matthews, they are committing organizational suicide by not trading him. If he walks and they get nothing back consider them toast.

Get ready for an extended period of leaf drama about will he or won't he. (Ditto for Nylander. )
Matthews is getting excellent advice from his agent. Not taking max term and becoming a free agent before he hits his prime was a shrewd move. Matthews wisely bet on himself, and that bet is about to pay off handsomely.
Matthews won't forego the chance to hit the market as a UFA. He will knock it out of the park rather than accept a sign and trade, or simply re-sign with the leafs. He will hit the open market unencumbered. This will also impact any trade return the leafs get for trading him. Anyone who trades for him will realize they're getting a one-year guarantee of service and no more.
What top contender could fit Matthews' salary in their lineup next year? It will be interesting to see what happens there.
As for Matthews, he will make a precedent setting deal as a UFA, likey at a shorter term in my humble estimation, so that he can sign one more big deal before the end of his career. He won't be giving any discounts like Crosby did to help a team build a better supporting cast. I don't get the sense that winning is what drives him. I think he'll pile up the points and get paid handsomely for it for as long as he plays, and play a lot of golf each spring like he always has.

Jets get two-time cup winner still in his prime for their middle six.
Lambert's prospect reviews are mixed, but still good enough to interest Flames.
Their goalies have been on and off all season, but the Flames' real problem is no true first line.
Last year, more often than not, their first line found a way in tight games.
This year, more not than often.
The players may yet gel, but probably too late for this season.

Coleman would be welcome on any playoff team at the right price. It’s just a matter of finding the right fit.

Coleman’s contract isn’t that bad at all.
He’s on pace for 20 g, 45 pts (all 5 on 5) playing on Flames third line, yet his two-way game is his best attribute. Great motor; there are no signs he is slowing down.

Car gets quality 2-3 C. Pit, Col would bid as well.
Buf gets quality shutdown D, good example for their young d-men going in to the postseason.
Tor, Wpg would be interested too.
Tough to deny Flames' problems when exhibit A is on national tv. Never seen them so disengaged, and goalie issues for sure.
Even IF they somehow managed to make the playoffs, they are not contending with this lineup. Might as well get younger.

Again, I never said Leaf's prospects were crap.
There are a, b, and c prospects. To entice trade partners and outbid others, you quite often have to include a prospects to acquire a sought after player.

Difficult to know exactly what the Flames’ problem is, unless it’s just having to start a lot games down 2-0. Markstrom is so inconsistent, he is starting to look like Andre Red Light Racicot.
Even after Lucic planted Macdermid (which I thought might be a turning point for their season), they scored on a power play, but then promptly went back to sleep, aside from a few after-the-whistle pillow fights. No focus, no purpose, especially on offence.
What do you guys think? Is it the goalies? Is it Sutter? Both?
Anyway, I think Backlund and Taney would draw significant interest. There are a number of contenders who have yet to make a move.

NHL players are also high value assets. But they’re also people…and not everyone works well together.
It’s hard to describe when you have a tight team, be it be it an office team or a hockey team, but you know it when you see it. The opposite is also true.
Maybe it’s the wrong mix, maybe it just needs time to settle in. It’s hard to get the offense going when they’re worried about getting a save too.
Maybe the Coach has lost the room?
I imagine the they’ll figure it out in the off-season. Tre did a great job recovering assets this year, and maybe they just need extra time to settle in.
Whatever it is, time always tells the truth, and I suspect next year will be more productive in CGY.

I agree that A prospects have to be included to get a sought after player, just not a forward who has topped out at 34 points in first 6 seasons (Crouse) or a 3rd pairing dman (Schenn) . And I wouldnt send 3 B prospects for Crouse either. Most I would send is the 2023 3rd rounder and Niemela. If that doesn't get him I think the Leafs should move on.

Lots of 1st round picks and good prospects changing hands.
It's probably a reality check for some that the deadline is THE most expensive time to add. Look at all the picks that Jeannot got for NSH.
On the other side of the coin, if Kane only picks NYR as an acceptable team to waive to, he might only bring a 2nd with a prospect.
CGY would be wise to do either of these trades, and I could see COL adding Backlund as their #2 center.

How about a simple, straight-forward Leafs trade?
Tor: Rasmus Sandin, 2024 4th
Sea: Carson Soucy
Seattle gets younger, and a skilled left shot option for their power play. Change of scenery may justify Sandin's 2018 1st rd draft selection. Is dtd on ir.
Toronto gets some size and shutdown ability that's been missing since Muzzin went down. Soucy has played in Seattle's top 4. Rumoured to be available, UFA after this season.

Honestly not bad Sandin is coming along nice and I think he is very solid on the bottom pairing and can develop into a Cam Fowler Esq type of player but Soucy does bring a different element and is a current upgrade
With that being said I don’t think Soucy is actually available also I’m not sold that Sandin can afford to be traded due to him being so cost controlled.

Francis is the type of cerebral gm that will think about the future while adding for the playoffs. The Kraken defence is huge and not especially mobile.
Admittedly not great optics for Leafs, but Dubas is running low on trade chips attractive to other gms.
He needs to do more to help his team weather the East playoff storm.
Not bad adds up front so far, but can’t see them getting anywhere with that polite defence.

Add Hollowell to the deal and send a second with Soucy. Sandin is under cost control as is Hollowell but Soucywalks at the end of the year. Both Leaf guys are good puck movers while Soucy is a second pair physical guy. Sandin is expected to be a #2 defenseman.

Agree with Ebs, Couture, at 34, is the kind of player that a contender would add at the deadline thinking he could push them over the top, not a long term add which Cgy would need in exchange for someone like Lindholm.
4m/ yr is high but is market value for Zadorov.

Not going to comment on the Hall cocaine rumour, but I will say that any of you so negative about Zadorov obviously don’t watch many Flames’ games.
6’6”, 240, above average skater, who will run over anyone, anytime. Last year, on an up and down Flames’ team, he played almost 19 min/ gm, was +10, and scored 14 goals, more than double any Leafs’ d.
I agree, a trade for Nylander probably wouldn’t happen, but if Conroy does trade the Z-train, it should be for a late 1st at least (or equivalent), or he should just keep him.

Debate all you want, Lindholm has been and still is one of the most underrated players in the NHL.
The Flames will do their best to sign him. They obviously need more on their team, but he is a keeper. If nothing else, they want other teams to think that.
The results from NHL trades and drafts are mixed at best, but Lindholm completing one of the best first lines in the league with Gaudreau and Laine is about as sure as it gets.
I could easily see the discussion with the Jackets starting with Sillinger and that early 2nd, but don’t think that’s nearly enough for the Flames.

Three factors at work here:
One, word was out to all GMs that Toffoli was available, so if anyone was going to make a better offer, they would have done so.
Two, Conroy absolutely did Toffoli a favour by dealing him now, when he could’ve done better at the deadline. And, with everything else going on, does Calgary really need the distraction until then?
Three, and most relevant, the Flames ownership are dictating moves like this (trading for roster players instead of high draft choices), because of fear and impatience (Can’t even say the “R” word). That lack of autonomy is why Treliving did virtually nothing at the last deadline, and why he left.
One sees teams like Nashville and St. Louis recognizing that they weren’t contenders and acting accordingly. Calgary absolutely should have done the same, but ownership was having none of it.
Having said all that, this return for Toffoli isn’t horrible at all. Calgary needs to get younger, bigger, faster, and needs cap space. Check, check, check, and check. A first round pick instead might’ve been nice, but see above.
