Leafs need help on the back end

Tor - Jvr, kappanen, polak and conditional 2nd if St Louis makes the finals. If not becomes a 3rd.

Stl - shattenkirk - sign and trade - 7mil 5 years.

I'm still confused why the conditional pick from the leafs gets better if the blues go further in the playoffs. Seems like a backwards negotiation to me. Shouldn't the second become a 3rd if they make the finals? Because it means they got better value from the other pieces in the deal? Or the 3rd becomes a second if somehow shattenkirk helps the leafs make the playoffs this year?! But the way it is in this trade makes no sense.

C'mon Colt. The leafs 1st could be worth a lot more than Shattenkirk. Why don't the Blues need JVR? Is it because he'd be the best winger on the team other than Tarasenko?

Deal makes total sense from TOR's point of view, I don't see it working for STL. Polak is a decent bottom-2 but dunno that STL needs him. Plus where do you play JVR? Blues can't even figure out where to play Fabbri.

On second thought, forget this trade.
