Here is my rant about the Leafs. Why is there a HUGE love affair for Kessel in TO. He is either loved or hated and the way the rumours are on here, The Leafs are expecting the Sun, Moon & Stars for him should he be traded. Yeah he has flashes of Brillance every now and then but other than that he is in my books a HIGHLY OVERATED & paid player that hasn't done much to deserve that much.

he hasn't done much, really?

you might want to look at his stats over the last 5 years.

2.) Great stats, proven goal-scorer without a doubt, but clearly not a franchise player that you build around (that's evident) and please don't even try to argue that he is very one-dimensional.

I'm middle-ground between the original post and first reply. Kessel is valuable (even though I hate him), but I think a lot of leafs fans expect too much in a trade for him. At the same time, I'm sure a lot of non-leafs fans undervalue him. It's hard to peg down a value for him because it would be a multi-player deal, but possibly something like a good top-6 scorer (or top-4 d), A prospect, and a mid-2015 2nd or a 2016 1st. Let's remember he just signed a very long extension. That's not a plus, that's a hindrance if he takes a nose dive.

That's off the top of my head so I don't need to hear blathering rants about how off the mark I am, ok? Especially if they are terrible arguments like "Worth O'Reilly and Mackinnon at LEAST!"

3.) I tend to agree with @Flames89. It sounds funny but the only thing Kessel can do is collect points. Don't get me wrong that is a highly coveted attribute but he isn't much of a leader, he has attitude issues, he doesn't play well at all in his own zone and doesn't have the drive to become a even better player. He makes 8 mil and when you stack him up against other stars in this league their isn't much debate who would you rather have.

4.) 30 Jan 2015 17:22:39
oh I know kessel isn't what you build your team around, I've said that many times, but the fact remains that he is a top point producer in the league.

as far as value, i'm nto going to bother because its likely that his value from team to team varies by quite a significat margin.

5.) Flames89 - He's the Leafs best player. One of the leagues highest scorers over the last 5 years. and he's done that on a mediocre team, without a #1 C. He really isn't overpaid (compared to his peers). He is just entering his prime. So, Why should the Leafs (and their fans) not ask for the sun, moon and stars (relatively speaking)? I say relatively speaking, bc I think you basing that opinion on some random posts is more than a little presumptive of what Leaf fans think Phil is worth in a trade.

Chirp - I think your trade suggestion is bang on with what the Leafs want in return. It's important to remember that he's going to get traded to a playoff team (so the 1st is going to be a late 1st). You also have to remember that the market for PPG top line wingers is pretty much non-existent. So Toronto has leverage there. I am not as convinced the contract is a big issue. It obviously limits the teams who are asking for him, but it's not like a team is trading for him in year 3 after a few down seasons.

If he gets trade, I think the Rick Nash trade is probably a good blue print. Bottom line though, IF he is traded, he's likely going to be traded for less than what some Leaf fans are suggesting he's worth, but more than what the haters think he's worth. Which is about as typical as you are going to find as it relates to the value of leaf players on this board.

6.) As a leaf fan who isn't completely lost and clueless, like most of us are, imo kessel is worth.

to a good playoff bound team.

their best prospect not drafted in the top 10 of the 1st round, a 2nd-3rd line servicable semi-decent player under 30 and a 1st round pick in this years draft (as deep as it is, 20-30th pick probably aren't franchise players) and the obvious bad contract to even out the money.

as far as being 1 dimensional, I've come to his defense multiple times saying he's grown leaps and bounds under carlyle, but he definitely has taken a step back from last season in that regard.

all that being said, he's our best player and I just want him to be better than he is. but I fear like dion, he got piad, now he can sit back, its toronto, where players come to not give a crap.

something needs to be done with this team, but most, if any of it won't happen till off season, I really hope shanny fires nonis, the scouting staff, everyone basically and just start fresh. wishful thinking with 2 giant competitor media conglomerates as the owners.

i need billions of dollars. kickstarter?

7.) Ovie, you wanna get into a logical yet spirited argument for old times sake? Haha.

Kidding. Good to see there is still at least one decent leafs fans with a brain between his ears on this site.

Btw, Kessel sucks. :P

This is my rant on the Kassian signing. The Canucks overpaid on this idiot. He's not worth that much. Why they keep signing guys like this. The thing that really frustrates me is all the talk about the upside potential he has and that soon he will flourish. Please this guy is worthless. He has taken foolish penalties and not only that but he has also not covered his guy and how easy it is to skate around this guy is funny. I hope soon this guy gets traded. It was sad that this is what they got in return for Cody. Thanks Gillis, this is one of the reasons why you got fired.

isnt he signed for like 1.75 mil? he's well worth that imo, even as a 3rd liner.

2.) Yeah I agree with the 1st response. He had 29 pts last season. Maybe he gets $1.5 million but I doubt he gets less than that.

3.) Have you watched him play? He takes some dumb penalties, but he shows he has skill and is a legitimate 3rd line winger and will only get better as he gets more consistent. To judge him on what he was traded for is unfair, judge him for how he plays

To whom ever posted Ryan Kesler trade to Toronto, are you out of your mind. What makes you think that Kesler would go to Toronto for?. Yes Nonis is there, but with that he still wouldn't go there. First off if you thought he didn't like talking to the Media here, it would be 10 times worse there than it is in Vancouver. Plus if he had a bad game in T.O. They would be all over him. So NO to Toronto and perhaps YES to either Pittsburgh, Anaheim or Chicago.

Flames89

1.) I heard today as of right now Kesler is only waiving his NTC to go to Anaheim and Chicago. That's it. Linden is in progress to try and get Kesler to give atleast 6 teams he'd waive to.

2.) TO doesn't need him anyways would cost to much he's past his prime now he's only going to get worse better off not giving up alot

I totally agree with you Lowe needs to go. Lowe is the reason where they are right now and for the past number of years. Ownership has got to get together and fire him along with others, if they don't then they are to blame as well and will continue down this down ward slope. I feel bad for the fans of this team.
