Saw a tweet by an Edmonton journalist David Staples and he suggested this:

To TOR:
1st Round Pick 2014 (1st overall)

TO FLA:
Dion Phaneuf (40% Salary Retained, 2.8 million retained)
1st Round Pick 2014 (8th Overall)

Dion Phaneuf would be coming in at 4.2 million and I actually think this is possible. Think of it like Ehlers and Phaneuf for Reinhart/Ekblad/Bennet.

Florida's biggest needs are D and the Wing and they are both solved through this trade. Phaneuf is also coming in at a bargain price at 4.2 million.

TheHen123

1.) There's no way toronto retains 40% for 7 years. If that's the case they'll trade him for other players that equal his salary

2.) Leafs will not trade Phaneuf for nothing, as there are no D on the free agent market to replace the minutes that he plays.
Niskanen will command 6 million +, for that price I would keep Phaneuf

3.) Florida retweets and say No Way!

4.) I see we have another trade for the 1st overall. Yesterday Dale Tallon’s Hockey’s godfather offered 18 1st round picks for the 2007 over all. Today years later Dale is lamenting that trade because all he got in return was Ennis, Carlson, Ashton and Despres. Today he asks his hockey godfather for a redo. His hockey godfather says, “OK, I did trick you. Here is a new deal. I will give you the picks 17 to 21 from the 2007 to 2010 drafts. ” Dale gets all excited because he will now get 20 MID-ROUND picks, much better than 18 from the last 6 1st round picks. Dales starts to get excited thinking about how he will use 20 first round picks. His picks are the same as found on Hockeydb. com. 2007: Alexei Cherepanov, Ian Cole, Logan MacMillan, Angelo Esposito, Riley Nash, 2008: Joey Hishon, Austin Watson, Nick Bjugstad, Beau Bennett, Riley Sheahan; 2009: David Rundblad, Louis Leblanc, Chris Kreider, Jacob Josefson, John Moore; 2010: Jake Gardiner, Chet Pickard, Luca Sbisa, Michael Del Zotto, Anton Gustafsson
Head in hand Talon says “AARG, I gave away Patrick Kane for 20 1st round draft picks and all I have to show for it is Ian Cole, Jake Gardiner, Luca Sbisa and Micheal Del Zotto. ” He shakes his fist in the air and says, “Hockey Godfather your tricked me again. ”

Some of you people are actuallly clueless.
If the Leafs retain 1 to 2 million in salary of Phaneuf's contract, they could easily get a 1st round pick/Good Prospect/2nd Line Center.

To NYI:
Phaneuf (2 million retained)
Rights to Bolland
2nd Round Pick 2016 (Conditional on if Bolland doesn't sign)

To TOR:
5th Overall Pick

Islanders want to go all in for 2015 so Buffalo doesn't get a really good pick from them. Toronto gets the 5th overall pick. Toronto shouldn't have to add their pick either.

TheHen123

1.) If they want to go all in, why would they trade for Phaneuf? And they could just throw money at Bolland after toronto doesn't re-sign him. Silliness.

2.) The proposal makes some sense, but the Leafs would want Reinhart or Bennett, and neither will be there at 5.

3.) I agree with your assessment about Phaneuf. He is totally under-rated by many of the contributors. (SBR 2017)

4.) Why would they want the Leafs to have the high pick but not the Sabres? So this proposal makes no sense. If you say the Isles do not want the Sabres to have it then they would not want the Leafs to have it. Rights to Bolland has no value as many think he would not be resigned. Phaneuf is under rated because of contract but does not mean he is the one the Isles would want

5.) Isles want to win just like any other team. To say they go all in so sabres can't get a good oick is dumb. Leafs would have gone all in so bruins didn't get seguin and hamilton lollll

TO TOR:
3rd Overall Pick

TO EDM:
Dion Phaneuf (50% Retained) 3.5 million

TheHen123

1.) Please stop. Dion is a GOOD d-man but not worth the 3rd alone not matter how much salary you keep!

2.) Not even close to get the 3rd pick throw in kadri and the 8th as well

3.) Phanuef is a decent d-man, but not worth the 3rd overall pick straight up

4.) Here we go again about his contract and value. Once again it's under estimated. If that's not fair than how about phaneuf, kadri, 8th overall for 3rd and yak. Although if t. o moves up there going after flo 1st overall and taking ekblad to bolster there d. Ekblad+ Reilly in the future would be a nasty combo

5.) It all depends on who is available at the 3rd overall. If it's a blue print of the pieces you already have and Toronto is willing to eat that much salary.

To TOR:
3rd Overall Pick

TO EDM:
Dion Phaneuf (50% Retained)
8th Overall Pick

Phaneuf at 3.5 million is a bargain for EDM. Toronto gets to draft a really good player at 3rd overall

Not sure if Toronto has to add their pick but anyways
Opinion?

TheHen123

1.) No way in hell TO retains 50% and if we didn't we wouldn't be giving up a 8th overall pick too phaneuf at 3.5 mill is mad cheap for a top 2 dman at that price we would get your 3rd overall +

2.) I think that trade is pretty spot on.

3.) So you are saying Phaneuf is better than Ekblad or Reinhart? IMO: NO WAY!

4.) So toronto wants to spend 3.5m cap space for 7 years to have a player not play for them? For a team that is constantly giving bad contracts and very close to cap it makes it even harder as you now have to find a new first pairing d man to play who will cost about 5-7m so your basically spending close to 10m for one d man if you look at it that way

5.) My opinion no chance leafs retain 50 percent of Dion's salary

6.) Not gunna happen. leafs won't need to retain any salary on a phaneuf trade. the return will be better than expected as well.

7.) Phaneuf is an established #2 d-man. seeing as you know what you have in phaneuf and what he brings and comparing it to chancing on a prospect that is a weak draft and no standout franchise player. the only one I see being a franchise player is ekblad. he's also going to go first overall.

8.) ^ if he is a bonafied #2 D why is rumored in trades and every single leaf fan wants to get rid of him.

9.) Change in leadership and it takes some to get some

10.) Dion never had leadership!

11.) Every leaf fan wants to trade Dion because there are rumours that he is being shoppes.

TO EDM:
Dion Phaneuf (50% salary retained)
*Therfore Edmonton will be paying Phaneuf 3.5 million.

To TOR:
3rd Overall Pick 2014

Before you guys say "It's Phaneuf, no one wants him", please remember this guy plays against the toughest competition in the league. He is a solid d-man and would look good in EDM alongside Ference or Schultz. And Phaneuf at 3.5 million (A guy who can play heavy minutes) is so much more enticing than phaneuf at 7 million

If Phaneuf gets traded, I wish him nothing but the best and so should other Leaf fans.

TheHen123

1.) Phanuef (50% retained) for Lander. Take it or leave it

2.) Phaneuf is a top 4 defencman, but even at 1 million per year it is a bad deal for Florida

3.) Not a fan of either team but I would say TOR would still have to add the 8th overall and EDM maybe adds a 2nd in 2015. ( they don't have a 2nd this year I believe).

4.) What he said is true. But Phaneuf at $3.5 million isn't even close to a 3rd overall pick. ^ I agree you have to add your first and probably a prospect or a young impact player.

5.) Probably the best Phaneuf trade I've seen here.
Question: What's the max you can retain? 50%?

Just my Top 10 for the Draft.
Suggestions and opinions are welcome of course.

FLA- Ekblad
BUF- Reinhart
EDM- Bennett
CGY- Nylander
NYI- Dal Colle
VAN- Virtanen
CAR- Draisatil
TOR- Ehlers
WPG- Ritchie
ANA- Perlini

TheHen123

1.) If Draisaitl goes 7th. steal of the draft!

2.) Leafs take one of three players if they are available at 8
1. Ritchie
2. Virtanen
3. Perlini
All in that order they stayed with Carlyle so we can all safely assume they want that big bruising yet talented crop of hockey player

3.) Draislaitl in #7? Are u NUTS?!

I know the Leafs defense isn't the best, but whenever I watch, I see more problems with their forwards not doing anything defensively. The Leafs should try to sign/trade for good defensive forwards.

Callahan would be a great signing but I doubt he wants to go to Toronto.

TheHen123

1.) Callahan is not a good fit in Toronto in my opinion. He would be like a second Clarkson. He wants 6MM a year and has never had a PPG season in the NHL (to the best of my knowledge). That money is best spent elsewhere.

If Florida wants Kessel, start with the 1st overall and Gudbransson.
Then the Leafs and Panthers have a real conversation.

(BTW Leafs don't add their pick)

If I'm Nashville I take that deal any day. Maybe instead of Hartnell, a good young prospect would fit better

I'm a Leafs fan too but I just want to slap some sense in to you. Clarkson is worth nothing. We are stuck with him for the next at least 4 years.
If we want Weber, start with Riely and JVR not Colton Orr and Phaneuf

The Leafs don't need these two.
If they trade Kadri, they will end up watching him in the NHL Playoffs do what he never did for the Leafs because they traded him.
And 3 years of Thornton and Marleau is just what the Leafs need right? (Sarcasm)
