- Value-wise, the assets are close. (WOW! )

But:

- as Balsam said, CGY isn't retaining half.
- leafs have 6.7M left in cap space. ya think ya might need a starting Goalie, maybe a 7th defencemen. and an 8th?

Pi n b all always seems to have posts begging teams to trade top players to the Leafs and then expect them to retain big $ for not much in return.
Next will be a long convoluted explanation why this is a fair trade for the Flames.

What team is rebuilding Calgary or Toronto?
Backlund isn't resigning after next season, yes maybe they can get more but that's a true "maybe".
Holmberg is a pretty good prospect and adding a 1st Round Pick is always a positive for a rebuilding team.
So yes Calgary does benefit from this trade proposal.

Counter offer. Every team knows Toronto can't keep their 4 together so matthews to Calgary (8×8) for 3rd, mangiapane, wolf. Toronto gets that elusive goalie, a 1st to replace matthews and a good young player. I actually just realized I've become pinball.

Hard to believe that the leafs are thinking about giving Matthews 14M+ considering how unsuccessful it's been for them to lock up half their cap in 4 guys.
