MTL:
- Price's contract on Sept. 1st
- 2026 6th
CHI:
- 2026 7th (originally FLA)
30 Aug 2025 18:41:40
So Chicago takes the salary for nothing?
31 Aug 2025 12:00:15
Nashan, with the floor being higher, and teams needing to reach it, and with Price’s bonus being paid as of Sept. 1st, his contract will be a cheap way of helping a team reach the floor. (10.5M cap hit for only 4M, and insurance pays half of that. )
31 Aug 2025 15:46:14
Floor is 70M and they are at 76M so again why take any salary for nothing?
31 Aug 2025 17:03:22
The cost to MTL to move Price’s contract is expected to be a late pick, but Nashan you are 100% correct they don’t need it. I was suggesting basically a 7th swapped for a 6th, but you are absolutely correct that CHI is already at the floor?.
02 Sep 2025 03:47:49
I’m thinking if I was the GM to take Price I’d want a second no worse. No favors as it is tough going in the nhl. I hope they don’t add any more teams to make it even more watered down.
03 Sep 2025 01:03:15
NASHAN: I totally agree that they shouldn’t expand, for the reason you stated. Unfortunately I fear they will to take the money that’s available.
The Habs have already ruled out a 2nd to the move Price. There are some teams that want to move out contracts that may need the Price cap hit to remain at the floor. The usual suspects seem to be PIT, SJ and CHI. Perhaps the upcoming GM meetings in Detroit will provide some answers?.
19 Aug 2025 02:45:04
Habs should try and do a 1 for 1 hockey trade
MTL sends : Mike Matheson
To kraken for : Jared McCann
At a reasonable 5 million for next 2 years habs get their 2 c until’ hage is ready
Habs trade from a position of strength LHD
I also believe habs should target pending ufa Connor Murphy a massive RHD defensive defenceman which I would pair with Hutson
MTL sends : Josh Roy, a 3rd and a 4th round
To CHI : for Connor Murphy
Slafkovsky Suzuki Caufield
Demidov McCann laine
Dach Newhook Bolduc
Anderson Evans Gallagher
Guhle Dobson
Hutson Murphy
Xhekaj Carrier
Struble reinbacher
19 Aug 2025 15:01:09
McCann is a winger.
19 Aug 2025 23:37:51
Memarcusjoe do you have any 2 c proposals in mind that wouldn’t include a core piece from the habs?
20 Aug 2025 15:04:09
Sidekick, there aren't really any 2C's available that are known of at this point, so you'd likely be looking at a project player or an older guy that a team wants to move on from. No possible names come to mind right now though.
21 Aug 2025 13:51:23
I can see something like this happening. McCann can play center, but plays wing in SEA since they’re pretty stocked down the middle.
24 Aug 2025 17:12:40
Yah McCann can play the middle for sure. I think he was in the 40s percentage wise in the dot so that's a spot that need work. He's solid at both ends of the ice. Age is right for where the habs are at. Id say Habs probably add a pick or two depending on what round they are in; but the structure is there for a deal to be made.
30 Jul 2025 03:51:04
Here’s 3 trades that imo would make habs legit this year and future
1 - habs trade with ducks
MTL sends : Newhook, Anderson and a 2026 1st round and 2nd
To Anaheim for : mctavish ( sign him to 8x8)
2- habs trade with Chicago
MTL sends Josh Roy and a 5th round
To chi for : Connor Murphy ( rhd big physical defensive defender, perfect to pair with Hutson )
3- habs trade with Columbus
MTL sends matheson
To Columbus for chinakhov
Slavkosky Suzuki Caufield
Demidov mctavish laine
Chinakhov Dach or Bolduc
Blais or veleno evans Gallagher
Guhle DObson
Hutson Murphy
Xehjaj Carrier
Struble
30 Jul 2025 13:33:20
This would certainly help Montreal. there's just no reason for the other teams to make those trades.
30 Jul 2025 13:56:23
Great targets for 1 and 2, and I haven’t seen Chinakhov play so I can’t comment there. (I’m interested in anyone’s thoughts that may have seen the kid play though?)
I think ANA and CHI would command more of a return than offered. I also tend to think that most teams will be reluctant to trade 2026 Draft Picks since the draft is a deep one. It will still happen, but perhaps not as often as it did in this June’s draft.
30 Jul 2025 18:41:17
On 1- throw in farrel and Luke tuch
On 2- throw in a 4th
30 Jul 2025 18:43:31
And make the first round on mctavish unprotected
30 Jul 2025 19:21:21
Throwing a couple more nickels into the pot, doesn't change anything for the other teams.
26 Jun 2025 00:30:02
Tampa:Gabriel Szturc,3rd
Calgary:Coleman
Chicago:3rd
Calgary:Backland
Dallas:Robertson,bourque
Calgary:Andersson -50%rtn,Zary,Mews,1rd via Florida,2nd
17 May 2025 15:49:33
NY Islanders trade to Chicago Noah Dobson, Matt Maggio, 2026 1st round pick (their own ) in return they get Chicago 3rd overall 2025 draft
17 May 2025 16:03:51
Highly overvaluing 3OA.
17 May 2025 22:01:00
they would Schaefer 1st and Hagens 3rd. Maggio is not going to be an NHL regular, their 2026 first round pick should 15th-20th. With Schaefer. Hagens, Ritchie and Eiserman a good group of prospects.
20 May 2025 13:22:50
I agree with Memarcusjoe.
Trading Dobson, in my humble opinion, would be a foolish decision.
20 May 2025 22:11:10
he's soft defensively, won' be worth the salary that he will demand.
01 May 2025 13:36:13
Chicago offer sheet to knies,7.5×7. Toronto can have their pick back and a a 2nd,3rd. Leafs can match if they let marner go.
01 May 2025 17:04:56
Any offersheet would involve next year's picks and the team making the offer has to use their own picks, not ones acquired that originally belong to another team.
02 May 2025 04:53:16
Not sure why someone would disagree with my previous post, as they are the offersheet rules, but whatever.
02 May 2025 10:54:10
Renidrag is 100% correct.
(Whenever someone downvotes something that is factually correct, and not just opinion, it’s always kinda funny to me, so that’s how I’d take it?)
?.
01 May 2025 13:15:53
Mtl: Laine , chi: 3rd
19 Mar 2025 02:53:24
The time for habs to end rebuild is this offseason and the next
Habs already got core forwards locked up
Suzuki, Caufield , slavkosky, probably superstar Demidov
Core defence : guhle , reinbacher , seems like superstar Hutson , xhejaj
Goalie : montembaut and potential superstar Fowler
This offseason I would trade price last year of contract to Chicago, which would give habs 25 million in cap space , with that I would target Duchene and Bennett at free agency
I would try and trade for Dobson at the draft
Slavkosky Suzuki Caufield
Demidov Duchene laine
Newhook Bennett Dach
Gallagher evans Anderson
D
Hutson Dobson
Guhle carrier
Xhejaj matheson
With Gallagher and Anderson contracts ending in 2 years
(12millions off the books) + cap going up , habs are looking pretty solid!
20 Mar 2025 17:51:12
The Price contract is over at the end of the 25-26 season, so it doesn’t hold the Habs back from making moves.
Dobson is a great target, and while the Habs have the trade capital for such a deal, the Isles would be foolish to move Dobson.
I don’t see Bennett leaving FLA, and I think Duchesne re-ups in Big D.
The Habs have the parts to exchange for a 2C and whatever else they think they need in a trade this summer. My guess is that it will be a 2C in the 25-27 age range to fit with the core of the team.
21 Mar 2025 14:58:33
@Chickenfoot what's Dallas' cap situation look like after the Ratanen extension? Duchene has been good for them, but will they be able to afford him? You have the luxury with Duchene that if the wanted to have Demidov get some reps at center that Duchene is capable of playing the wing as well. Or bring in Granlund and see if having a fellow Finn on his line can get Laine motivated to show up every game for the Habs
Idk how available Dobson is but as I said on another post I'd kick some tires on Faber since hes had a bit of down year. Reinbrecher has looked good returning from injury down in the AHL. If he stays the course I'm sure he will get some reps on the top pairing next year. Another option is Ekbald seeing as I don't imagine Florida is able to get him resigned.
24 Mar 2025 13:21:30
MG: Jim Nill does as good a job as anyone managing his cap. He's got 6 contracts coming off the books next year, so he'll have to pick and choose who he'll re-sign, and who he'll go after to replace those guys.
By most accounts Duchesne likes it in Dallas, as most do, and if I was a betting man I think he'll re-sign there.
If I'm the Habs' GM I don't see a need to trade for any D and block development paths for the kids, UNLESS it was for Dobson at the right price. (I still think the Isles would be foolish to give up on him, but Dobson has been a whipping boy on the Island this season, so anything is possible I suppose. )
11 Mar 2025 06:23:11
Just an idea for off-season. Edm: nurse ( 1 million retained) remaining contract. 3rd round.chi: brodie. Gives Edmonton room to go for marner. Still 4 years on nurse but get another pick and a ok bottom 4. Brodie only one year left so serviceable at 1 year gives Edmonton more flexibility.
02 Mar 2025 00:41:08
What's everyone's thoughts on the deal between the Blackhawks and the Panthers?
Chicago got Knight and a 2026 1st
Florida got Jones with $2.5mill retention.
02 Mar 2025 02:25:50
I think they have to a plan to trade mrazek or soderbloom. They can't retain on mrazek. So sell cheap on mrazek or high on soderbloom. Or just did it for the first and put knight on waivers to send him down to the minors which is probably most likely.
02 Mar 2025 12:47:30
I think it's a decent deal. This gives Florida security over ekblads UFA status. Losing knight could end up stinging in a couple years as Bob ages. But each team addresses a key issue for both now and next season.
26 Feb 2025 03:10:40
Toronto: kampf, minten, domi..Chicago: Jones 50% next 4 years. Connor Murphy signed through next year. Domi said he liked it in Chicago kampf can return as a overpaid 4th liner. Minten is the prize for retaining and would have more opportunity in Chicago. Immediately gives Toronto a better than most teams 2nd pair. Domi did better in Chicago with a bigger role.
26 Feb 2025 14:35:06
So Toronto gets to dump 2 salaries and one B+ prospect, and gets Jones at 50% retained? I don't think so Tim.
26 Feb 2025 15:10:24
Jones is becoming toxic for Chicago. They need to dump him for anything they can get. Just throwing things out there. He needs to be gone.
26 Feb 2025 18:11:09
50% salary retention requires draft pick compensation. The market value for 50% of a $9.5 million salary for 4 years would be at least a 1st round pick.
Kampf and Domi likely won't waive their clauses to go to a basement team like Chicago when Toronto is in playoff position and could go deep if they add.
Toronto has $2.2 million cap space as of Feb 26. Kampf makes $2.4m and Domi makes $3.75m, all together that's $8.35m cap space if they trade off Domi and Kampf.
Jones at 50% off is $4.75m and Murphy makes $4.4m, all together that's $9.15 million in salary, which puts Toronto over the cap.
25 Feb 2025 20:40:50
Chicago: connor Murphy 50% this year and next , Ryan Donato
...Washington:1st and Boston 2nd this year, Lars Eller to make cap work. Seeing Washington is looking for a middle 6 forward and a second pairing defenseman, 2 birds with one stone. Eller is 35 and Donato is a big upgrade and Murphy cheap for next year.
25 Feb 2025 15:45:39
Chicago: Jones...Vancouver: petterson.
24 Feb 2025 21:44:33
Edmonton: skinner, 2026 1st ,2025 2nd ....Chicago: seth jones 2
million retained for remaining contract. Making jones 7.5 so more affordable. Skinner not working out to much in Edmonton but would have to wave no move. A long shot but would like jones on Edmonton instead of a bottom team. Bouchard and ekholm are top pairing but imagine a top 2 in the second line. Retaining 4 years is a lot. That's why a 1st and 2nd even though jones is by far the superior player.
25 Feb 2025 12:46:43
Add Savoie and this could work.
25 Feb 2025 15:39:08
I like the idea, but EDM needs a G too. They’d need to pull a trade for a starting G simultaneously or else they’d be absolutely be held over a barrel.
Any thoughts on a G for EDM? If they could find another “Roloson” trade that would be ideal, but nothing comes to mind.
26 Feb 2025 03:34:55
I was talking Jeff skinner, but mrazek has been pretty good when healthy so could do something with that. Soderbloom and when brossoit is healthy
they're fine. With pickard and retained on mrazek something could work.
02 Mar 2025 02:31:57
Basically what he got, I'm smart.
23 Feb 2025 19:57:28
Toronto: nick Robertson, 2025 3rd ...Chicago Alec Martinez 50% retained
22 Feb 2025 00:00:22
Chicago: Jones ( 1 mil retention for this year and next 4) Colorado: mittelstadt (1mil retention this year and next 2 years) and Carolinas 2nd this year.
22 Feb 2025 15:50:55
This seems to be a fair trade as both players could be a great addition to their new team.
18 Feb 2025 17:03:00
MTL: Matheson (1yr left x 4.875m)
CHI: Jones @ $2M retained (now 5yr x 7.5m), TOR 2025 1st
Hawks unload Jones at steep price, getting immediate cap space to go big-game hunting. Matheson has proven ability to shelter a young D-corps, and would easily fetch a haul (1st+) at next year’s deadline.
Habs get big veteran RHD at a now-reasonable price who will play heavy minutes + PP2 throughout his deal. Provides time and shelter to Reinbacher & Mailloux, and gives the Habs time to draft and develop a Jones-replacement.
Long term who says no to
Hutson - Jones
Guhle - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux/ Carrier/ Replacement.
18 Feb 2025 17:36:55
Jones performance are just going downward, even at 7.5 M, i dont think habs need him.
18 Feb 2025 20:16:43
MTL has more cap space and flexibility with Matheson, who is from MTL, and likely to re-sign if they chose to.
If MTL wanted to trade Matheson next year, they’d get a 1st and a 3rd easily for him, so no rush to make the deal a year early.
19 Feb 2025 14:11:18
Jones has positive value imo 9 million with the cap rise of 23ish million over the next 3 years isn’t much. he’s still a top 2 dman on most teams. He’s solid on both ends of the ice. It’s rumoured Stars are interested especially with Heiskanen out.
20 Feb 2025 15:34:29
No, Chicago would make a hockey trade, forget the first round and retention. A mid 6 for a top 2 and a first and retention? That is called highway robbery. Like when calgary traded monahan to Montreal.
21 Feb 2025 13:31:25
I am not much of a Matheson guy - viewing him as a "no D" D'man. Chicago says no.
23 Feb 2025 19:22:58
Definitely would take jones at 7.5 for 4 years then Matheson at 6.85 for 1 and still pay another 3 years for it and a 1 round pick. this is ridiculous.
12 Feb 2025 10:34:08
Chicago: Donato. Edm: Kane(50%) 2026 1st......Kane is a lazy player with 1 more year but when he tries he's good. Donato is a full engine guy that will help with playoffs. Oilers save money now but have to pay.
09 Feb 2025 18:21:58
Calgary: Huberdeau, Chicago: Jones
10 Feb 2025 17:09:16
Interesting. They're both having decent years, but Jones has one less year of term, and costs 1M/ year less, and is one year younger.
10 Feb 2025 18:50:11
And to add he’s also a RHD which is far harder to replace then a winger.
13 Feb 2025 21:36:08
Chicago is basically set for many years at defense, trade an overpaid de for an overpaid winger. I don't know jones worth but trading for a forward would be good.
30 Jan 2025 03:56:02
I have two hypothetical trades proposals for canadiens That I think would end the rebuild
1 Montreal trades with Vancouver
MTL sends : both 2025 1st round picks , 2026 1st round pick top 5 protected, Josh Anderson and matheson
To Vancouver for Elias petterson
2 : Montreal trades with Chicago
MTL sends : mesar , engstrom, both 2025 2nd round pick
To Chicago for Seth jones (50% retained) 4.75 per
Habs next year lineup
Slavkosky Suzuki caufield
Demidov petterson laine
Newhook dach heinemen
Roy Beck. Gallagher
Defence
Hutson jones
Guhle carrier
Xehjaj Mailloux
30 Jan 2025 18:09:51
Huge overpays from MTL, and neither Pettersson nor Jones are the right targets in my humble opinion.
I doubt Jones would consider going to another rebuilding team, and asking CHI to eat half his salary for 3 more seasons after this is a tall ask.
MTL has a good thing going with their rebuild. What they've got in the system is coming together, and Demidov is looking great in the K. I'd keep the picks unless there's a truly remarkable trade value that presents itself.
30 Jan 2025 21:03:50
I agree with Chickenfoot on this.
At this point, I just want to see minor tweaks, nothing to major.
31 Jan 2025 05:53:47
Chicago might retain 2>3 million, they're not retaining half. Call back in a year or two.
04 Feb 2025 21:19:40
I agree with Chickenfoot and Sosa, keep the ship moving in the direction it is in.
